Embracing change: a personal journey of career transition

embracing change

In this Writer’s Room blog, Andela Community member Danilo Barion Nogueira shares his experience with a dramatic career transformation – changing paths from being a nutritionist to becoming a Senior Software Engineer! And that shift didn’t just improve his career – it changed his entire life for the better!

I’m sure you have heard the following: “Starting is the hardest part”, or, “taking the first step is half the way” before, haven’t you? But what about when that first step has already been taken, and the current path doesn’t seem like the best or most stimulating one anymore?

Are we destined to keep going in the same direction forever?

There is no single answer, as it depends on which aspect of life we consider, like our current life context, age, professional expectations, and more. However, I’d like to respond to some of these questions by sharing an example of my own professional journey, not to serve as an insurmountable model, but as a stimulus for your own reflection.

In 2005, I started my first college degree in Nutrition. That’s right, I’m a nutritionist!

I worked in the field, participated in congresses, won awards, and published scientific articles. I had a successful career. However, after a while, I no longer had that spark in my eyes, and I was also disappointed with the field for other personal reasons.

During that time, I discovered my true professional passion: programming and technology! I used my computer a lot and enjoyed exploring new tools and software products, keeping up with the latest news in the field, and understanding how different technologies work. My aptitude for exact sciences appeared, with an easy understanding of database concepts, logic, and programming languages, among others.

So I decided to revolutionize. I started by moving to a different city and getting a temporary job, not related to technology, since I still didn’t have any real experience. After that, I started another college degree, and was tirelessly pursuing growth in the programming field. I can only say one thing – it has been an intense time since I embraced those decisions and changes! But let me tell you, I would do them all again if needed! After many years and job changes, I’ve achieved various goals and overcame challenges, and alongside all of that, had a lot of fun in the process!

But what am I trying to say with all of this? That changing career path is not only possible, but essential to building a good life!

Change fields if you are no longer satisfied! Create a transition plan with the items you need to guarantee during this process. For example, can you leave your current job? Can you train in your new desired field? Is it possible to start this activity as a hobby and later turn it into something more profitable? Are there any limitations that can prevent you from achieving your goals, and any additional skills that can help you?).

In one way or another, think, dream, do, and take small, medium, and large steps along the way. Seek professional guidance, talk to people you trust, and plant the seed of change! Don’t be afraid!

By taking a thoughtful and intentional approach to your career transition, you can create a path that aligns with your values, interests, and goals. While the process may be challenging, the rewards of finding a career that truly resonates with you can be immeasurable.

Here are some key points for you to think about during this transition time:

  • When facing a career crossroad, take the time to reflect on your values and interests. Consider what motivates and excites you in your work, and whether your current career path aligns with those passions. This process can help you identify new career possibilities and take the first step towards a change.
  • Consider the practical aspects of transitioning to a new career, such as the financial implications, necessary education or training, and the availability of job opportunities. While taking risks is an essential part of growth and progress, it’s important to approach career transitions with a solid plan and a realistic understanding of the challenges ahead.
  • Seek guidance and support from others during your career transition. This can include working with a career coach, talking to friends and family members, and connecting with others in your desired industry. Building a network of supportive and knowledgeable individuals can help you stay motivated and focused throughout the transition process.
  • Embrace a growth mindset and approach your career transition as an opportunity to learn and develop new skills. Embracing challenges and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone can help you build resilience and become more adaptable, which are essential qualities in any career.
  • Don’t be afraid to pivot or adjust your career goals as you gain more experience and knowledge. As you explore new career possibilities, you may discover unexpected opportunities or encounter obstacles that require a change in direction. Being flexible and open to change can help you navigate these challenges and find a career path that is both fulfilling and sustainable.

I guarantee that a lot of growth will happen in this process, not only in your career but also in your personal life!

To conclude, I recommend the great movie “Yes Man!” Besides starring Jim Carrey, it may help you reflect on life choices and decisions.
